How to Create a Custom GPT Model

Sign Up for GPT Plus

Visit the ChatGPT website or open the app, then log in. You’ll see a “Create a GPT” button at the top of the page. Clicking this starts your custom GPT journey.

Begin by providing a name, description, and custom instructions for your GPT. This sets the personality and objectives for your chatbot. Check how your GPT performs in the Preview window on the right. Test it with different prompts and adjust the instructions on the left until it meets your requirements.

If you have specific data for the GPT, such as documents or files, upload it. This information will help customize the chatbot further. You can also select various functions like:

  • DALL-E for generating art
  • Search engine access
  • Data analytics

Once satisfied, click the green “Publish” or “Update” button to finalize and save your new custom GPT. It will appear in the left-hand menu alongside OpenAI GPTs and any other custom models you’ve created.

To share your custom GPT, access the three-dot menu next to it. Set sharing preferences to keep it private, only accessible via plugins, or shareable with a link. After publishing, send the custom link to anyone you want.

Accessing the GPT Builder

Go to the ChatGPT website or app and log in with your credentials. Find the “Create a GPT” button at the top of the page. Clicking this button will initiate your custom GPT creation.

Provide some basic information for your new chatbot:

  1. Name your custom GPT
  2. Write a description that outlines its purpose
  3. Set up custom instructions

These instructions establish the parameters and behavior for your custom chatbot. As you enter these details, observe the Preview window on the right-hand side. This feature shows in real time how your GPT will respond to various prompts. By testing and adjusting the instructions, you can refine your chatbot’s performance.

Customizing Instructions and Data

Utilize the Preview window to improve your AI’s responses, modify its instructions, and incorporate specific data sources. You can upload files and documents to equip the AI with necessary data for more effective operation. For example:

  • Upload training manuals to create a customer service bot
  • Incorporate technical papers for a research assistant bot

Next, customize your GPT’s functionalities. These include tools like DALL-E for art generation, search engine capability for retrieving current information, and data analytics features for processing complex datasets. These functionalities are accessible through a simple selection process and can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of your custom model.

Throughout this process, use the Preview window to test how different instructions and data inputs affect the GPT’s output. This iterative testing ensures your custom GPT performs as needed. Once satisfied, publish your custom GPT using the green “Publish” or “Update” button.

Publishing and Sharing Your GPT

After finalizing your custom GPT, select ‘Publish’ or ‘Update.’ You’ll then choose your sharing options, which control who can access and use your custom chatbot.

Decide if the GPT is for:

  • Private use only: Keeps the GPT exclusive to your account
  • Accessible via a shared link: Allows for more controlled distribution
  • Public: Makes your GPT available for anyone to find and use

To share your GPT, copy the custom link generated after publication. Distribute this link to your intended audience via email, social media, or any preferred communication platform. Recipients can access and interact with your GPT by following the link.

Now, you’re ready to bring your custom GPT to life and share it with others. This tool offers a range of possibilities for both personal and professional use. With the ability to create specialized AI assistants, the potential applications are vast, from enhancing customer service to accelerating research processes.
